Cargo ship registration
Ship registration is the process by which a ship is documented and given the nationality of the country to which the ship has been documented. The nationality allows a ship to travel internationally as it is proof of ownership of the Vessel.
Requirements for registration
Vessels that operate internationally are required to be registered. The country of registration is a ship’s flag state and determines its nationality as well as which country’s laws govern its operation and the behavior of its crew.
Each registry has its own rules as to the types of vessels that it will accept for registration.
Procedure of Ship Registration and Documents
The most common required documents prior to register a ship are:
- Application
- Copy of certificate of incorporation for the ships ‘company
- Proof of ownership (Bill of Sale, Builder´s Certificate, Deletion Certificate issued by the previous register). These documents must be notarized.
- Written consent of ship’s mortgagee, if any.
- In some cases, report of Pre-registration inspection (we can provide this)
- Copy of tonnage certificate
- P&I Blue card when applicable o equivalent as relevant insurance cover of liability, to obtain the CLC.
- Copy of Continuous Synopsis Records (CSR) (Full set
Ship Registration
Is the process by which a ship obtain the right to fly a flag from an state, according their own legislation. As soon as the vessel is acceptable for the registry, will operate under the laws of such flag. The registration of ships is regulated by The United Nations Convention on Conditions for Registration of Ships (1986)| “A State of registration shall establish a register of ships flying its flag, which register shall be maintained in a manner determined by that State and in conformity with the relevant provisions of this Convention”.
